With the lure of a 2025 FIM Speedway Grand Prix (SGP) qualifying spot up for grabs, a star-studded line-up of local riders will take on international powerhouse Tai Woffinden in the 2024 FIM Oceania Speedway Championship, which will be held in Gillman (SA) on Saturday, January 27.
Former Australian champions Brady Kurtz, Max Fricke and Sam Masters are among the riders selected, as well as 2020 U21 world champion Jaimon Lidsey, Justin Sedgmen, Zane Keleher, reigning U21 Australian champion Michael West and Josh Pickering, who won the Johnnie Hoskins Founder’s Cup in Kurri Kurri on December 16.
Woffinden, the supremely entertaining three-time SGP champion, and fellow Briton Sam Hagon will represent the overseas contingent in the Oceania Championship.
For the first time ever, the FIM Track Commission has awarded an SGP qualifying spot for the first-placed Australian rider (with a Motorcycling Australia licence) in the 2024 FIM Oceania Speedway Championship.
The rider who wraps up that spot will then compete in one of four European-based qualifying rounds in 2024, with the top four riders from each round then progressing to the final-frontier SGP Challenge meeting where the first three will be added to the 2025 SGP roster.
